Fancy Feet
10.2.11
by Valerie Weaver and Pam Parker
Oh, the power of the shoe. Cinderella is a great example of how shoes can change your life.
Now most of us don't have a prince waiting, but we do have an obsession with footwear. Oprah's fancy feet made Christian Louboutin's signature red-soled shoes, with a price tag starting at $700, one of the hottest shoe trends ever.
While some women choose expensive jewelry, works of art, a designer suit or even cosmetic enhancements as a reward for one of life's milestones, others opt for some Christian Louboutins designer shoes (and red soles). Shoes make an outfit, and they can make you feel great.
Style at a Bargain
Feeling good, isn't that what it's all about? So when we look for shoes that make us look and feel good, many of us want a bargain. Enter Christine Eddy, a self-proclaimed Erie fashionista, who also coveted designer shoes but discovered Naughty Monkeys instead.
So what are Naughty Monkeys? Something to go ape for, of course. The brand swung into view in 2004 in major-city specialty boutiques and caught on with e-commerce websites and at Buckle in the Millcreek Mall. Designs feature heels, wedges, boots, sandals and flats. And they offer style, sophistication and fun.
Eddy first fell in love with a $150 pair at Nordstrom. Being a savvy shopper, she found the same furry pair of leopard print, open-toed Naughty Monkeys with great buckles. The shoes have a furry feel, and she got them brand new, for $39.99, on eBay. She's been a big fan ever since. "You know you are wearing a killer pair of shoes when people ask to pet them," Eddy said.
Size Doesn't Matter
Shoes are that fabulous accessory that shouts out personal style. Shoes are among the most important ingredients in updating our wardrobes each season. And you don't have to be a size 0 to enjoy great-looking kicks.
Nancy Purchase, whose shoe collection is quite extensive, had a good point. "Your shoes always fit you, no matter what weight you are," she said.
If your wallet isn't big enough for a pair of designer shoes, you'll spy some edgy, fun styles that won't have you maxing out your credit card to wear them.
We selected heels for this shopping trip, but if you prefer flats, you can find similar styles in lower heels, wedges and flats. No matter what height you like, put your best foot forward in style.

Everyone knows the color red can be sexy, daring and extremely powerful. But what you might not realize is that red is a classic color. Yes, classic! It never goes out of style and can be worn in dozens of ways.
You don't have to wrap yourself in red to make a statement. In fact, when it comes to red, a little can go a long way. Jazz up your wardrobe with some bold, red accessories or step out in a great pair of red boots. You'll boost your self-confidence and draw lots of compliments.
Here are a few tips to help you use this color to express your personal style:
1) Pick the right red. Reds can range from a soft pink to plums and purple reds. Wearing the right hue can make you look fabulous, but wearing the wrong shade can make you look a little pale. If you have cool, blue undertones, stick with the berry reds that have a blue undertone. If you have more of a warm, peachy skin tone, a warmer, orange red is best.
2) Pair it with a neutral. Neutrals, such as gray, brown and beige, look fabulous with red. Accenting with red brings more subdued hues to life. Try pairing a red camisole with a neutral suit, or a great red jacket with gray slacks. Red also looks fabulous with muted metallic neutrals -- think a great pair of gold or silver shoes with cream-colored pants and a red sweater.
3) Walk tall. Oprah has made Christian Louboutin her signature red-sole shoes, and country singer Kelly Pickler wrote a whole song about red high heels. There's just nothing like a pair of red heels to bring a little sex appeal to any ensemble. Wear them with black or neutral pants or even a great pair of jeans. Add a signature red handbag, if the mood strikes.
4) Don't go overboard. When wearing a lot of red, such as a dress or suit, choose neutral or metallic accessories to complement but not distract from the color.
5) Pucker up. Red lips never go out of style, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Go light on the eye shadow and blush -- you don't want to look like a clown. Red lipstick also tends to bleed, so be sure to line your lips and pick the right shade for your skin. Don't try to match your nails; opt for a clear or light polish that doesn't clash.
So, get your red on. You'll turn heads and look like the powerful woman you are!
Lounging In Style!

Strolling through a lingerie/intimates department, do you find yourself looking at cotton flannels instead of pretty lace and silk? As we age, women often feel we don't have the body or the need for pretty loungewear. Instead, we often cuddle up in sweats.
A look at the beautiful stuff we found beats baggy old sweats any day, and honestly, some of it is cheaper than sweats. And way more flattering. Whether you're sitting around and watching TV or snuggling up with your honey, you can look relaxed and attractive in "soft clothes" -- what I call the updated intimates in the wardrobe. These include tank tops with cotton pajama bottoms, brightly colored satin PJs and loungewear. Ladies, I am here to tell you that if you feel good about what you're wearing, it will boost your confidence and mood. Susan Lucci of Susan Lucci Intimates says women of any age can feel sensual and sexy, and you don't have to be a small size to look fabulous.
Fabric, fit and color are three elements to keep in mind when choosing your loungewear.
Fabric
Most women want lingerie that feels good, is comfortable and sexy. With today's technology, material and fabric are softer and more comfortable than in the past. Silk is one of the softest fabrics next to your skin, and it can be a pricey but a good investment because of its comfort.
Silk warms up with your body heat (perfect for winter) and is very durable as well. Satin is a lot like silk, except it is a synthetic blend. Satin is one of the most common lingerie materials and far less expensive than silk. Satin breathes and does not hold in moisture, so it feels great on the skin.
Synthetic blends often use cotton, rayon and other synthetics, and the materials are soft to the skin and don't have irritants in them. They guard against any moisture issues, so they keep you dry and comfortable.
Comfort
If you have an ill-fitting, scratchy lace teddy in the drawer, leave it there. We are talking about a new sexy that's cute, sassy and cozy. You can look good and be casual at the same time as long as you can move around in comfort.
Styles
Many styles can be downright sexy and appealing if they have the right cut and look. Make sure the cut and style complements your body type. Here are a few of the most popular flattering loungewear styles, but don't limit your choices. Let your inner voice be your guide:
Chemise and Robe
The modern chemise is often thought of as a short lingerie garment. It usually is a short sleeveless gown that skirts the mid-thigh. The chemise is often sold in sets with a pretty robe made from silk or satin. This classic style and design will slim most women and will skim and hide any imperfections. The adornment of bows, lace or ruffles can add to the sex appeal of this piece.
Peignoir Set
You don't have to be prepping for a wedding to buy a peignoir set. A classic peignoir set consists of a long flowing gown with a robe to match, although many modern sets feature shorter gowns. Most women have probably had at least one in a lifetime. So whether you have been married for years or just want to lounge around feeling feminine and romantic, this is a nice option.
Satin Pajamas
These come in a variety of great colors and designs. They are extremely comfortable for sleeping or lounging. Silk or satin are better choices, so be sure to read the tag. Some have a polyester blend that doesn't breathe and therefore can be uncomfortable. An ultra-special touch is embroidery or initials to personalize the set.
Undergarments
A secret weapon every woman should have is the Coobie bra from Braserie, Dearie! This ultra comfortable bra has removable molded cups and is very supportive and inexpensive. It feels like you are wearing nothing at all. Available in three different styles and 20 colors, one size fits most. The Coobie is also an ideal post-breast-surgery bra. This new find is one of my favorite things, and every woman should have one in each style. Trust me on this one!
Remember, lounging in style has nothing to do with size. It's a reflection of who you really are. Maybe you like wearing one of your guy's shirts to sleep in and hang in, and as long as you are expressing yourself, that's what counts (if you're counting sheep ... or not).
Step up to fun footwear
By Valerie Weaver
Dec. 5, 2010
Boots have been a hot trend for the past few fashion seasons, but they really took off this fall when we saw them on the runway paired with everything from dresses to pants to leggings.
Footwear can change the entire tone of your outfit, so why not have fun with it? Boots can provide as many options as shoes, and they are a great way to bring style and comfort to your winter ensembles.
Here are a few of the hottest trends and how to wear them.
Knee-high dress boots
A classic leather pair with a stiletto heel will dress up any outfit you team them with. Dressy and chic, these boots are extremely versatile.
Here are a few things to wear with tall dress boots.
- A long skirt, narrow or full, is one of the most flattering items to pair with this boot.
- Try a knee-length skirt with a fun color tight such as pink or gray.
- Any kind of sweater, wrap, tunic or empire waist dress.
The slouch boot
I personally love this boot. There are so many different styles to choose from, and they are flattering on most everyone. They are more forgiving if you have a larger calf, and you can choose from ankle to knee height. Here are a few suggestions.
- Pair with leggings and a mid-length sweater dress or skirt.
- Try with different types of skirts. Pair shorter boots with a long broom skirt for a bohemian look or a longer boot with a pencil skirt for a more sophisticated look.
- Try with a dress for a fun, edgy look.
Ankle boots
One of the most popular looks this fall is the ankle boot. The wide variety of styles available in ankle-high boots makes this look appealing to most everyone. One look you will want to avoid is pairing them with cropped leggings or short tights -- it will shave inches off your height and add bulk. But ankle boots look great with many other looks. Here are a few:
- Have great legs? Try a shorter skirt a few inches above the knee, but skip anything too full or you could resemble a figure skater.
- Try them with leggings and a long cardigan sweater.
- Ankle boots work well with any kind of pants; you get ankle coverage without the bulk of knee-high boot.
Over-the-knee boots
Increasingly popular, over-the-knee boots can be perceived as provocative and sexy or stylish and sophisticated. It is all in how you wear them and how high the heel is. When trying to make them work as a stylish addition to your wardrobe, opt for a lower heel and ...
- Wear over leggings with a loose sweater and chunky accessories.
- Pair with a thigh-length sweater dress.
- Try them with skinny jeans and top with a white shirt and wide belt.
- Make every effort to match your tights or leggings as closely as possible to elongate the leg.
My last piece of advice is, as always, let the fit be your guide. If it fits, flatters and feels good -- wear it.

Give the skinny jeans and jeggins look a chance

Love 'em or hate 'em, skinny jeans and jeggins (denim leggings) are everywhere this season. They're not just for skinny women. Seriously, don't rule them out at first glance; give them a fair chance.
Most of us are always trying to balance out our figures, and I realize that if legs aren't one of your best features you may not even consider trying on a pair of jeggins. But, I'm here to tell you that women of any shape and size can wear these -- the key is to find the perfect pair for your body type. Pack your patience with you when you go shopping; plan on trying on many pairs until you find the ones right for you.
Keep in mind that skinny doesn't mean skin tight. You will want a cut with a little bit of stretch in them so you can move and be comfortable.
Once that challenging part is over, here are a few ideas to help you wear them with style:
1) Opt for dark-wash denim or black. Darker colors will make your legs look longer and slimmer. Do not buy distressed or light colors unless you have bean poles for legs.
2) Pair skinny jeans with a tunic or sweater that hits below the hips. Never let your top end at your widest area; a longer top is better. If you have a small waist, go ahead and cinch a belt around it. Cardigans, longer blazers and flowy tops also work well.
3) Trench coats are also a great topper for skinny jeans. Try one of the newer military-style coats, like the plaid coat at right.
4) Footwear matters. A hot pair of stilettos, ankle- or knee-length boots with a heel work for day or night. Avoid wearing high slouchy boots or you will have lollipop legs.
5) Finally, if you just don't feel good in them, then they aren't for you. None of us wants to be a slave to fashion. Remember: the golden rule in fashion is to only buy what fits, flatters and feels good.

Selling your clothes to — and shopping at — consignment stores has become a savvy-shopper standby. We all have things we don't wear anymore; why let them take up valuable closet space? Why not cash in on your fashion mistakes and earn a little money?
If you have items that no longer suit you, pass them on. Someone else may find them to be the perfect fit.
Here are a few tips for selling to and buying from a consignment store to help you become a first-class bargain shopper.
Tips for buying
1. Build a rapport with sales clerks. Once you are a regular and they know your style, they can let you in on the best finds before they even make it out to the rack.
2. Try everything on. Sizes vary, and some items may have been altered. Also, many items don't have hanger appeal, but when you try them on, you may be pleasantly surprised.
3. Don't rush. Unlike a department store, there are usually just a few of each item at a consignment store. You need to look at each item on the racks so you don't miss that perfect item for you.
4. Be sure to get on the store's mailing list to keep you informed of upcoming sales and events. Many stores have a monthly dollar or bag sale. I have had a lot of fun at these. Just be prepared to compete with other bargain shoppers looking for great deals, too.
5. Get over worrying about been seen at a consignment store. It's chic to be a smart shopper and everyone loves a great deal. Most of us want to look our best without breaking the bank, and consignment shopping is a great way to do it.
Tips for selling
1. Call ahead to make an appointment and to learn about store policies. Some stores only take a few items at a time, so call and find out what to expect. Items should be in style, in great condition and in season.
2 Most stores donate unsold items to charity after 90 days. If you don't want your items donated, make sure the store knows it.
3. Don't be offended if they don't accept everything. The stores know their market and what sells.

About the outfit featured in the photo above:
This ruffled tiered skirt, $8, is both flattering, functional and fun. Because the skirt is so colorful, we opted for a solid black V-neck sweater with an embellished neckline, $16. The lime green shoes, $7, purse, $7, bracelets, $1, and earrings, $4, pull the whole look together. All items from Classic Consignments, 1250 Brown Ave.
Put It In Neutral
by Valerie Weaver
6.6.10
Soft neutral shades of taupe, sand, cream and metallics are elegant classics that form the backbone of many wardrobes, for good reason -- neutral-toned clothing, handbags and accessories work with every trend. Plus, everyone can wear this color palette, regardless of skin tone.
Neutrals don't have to be boring. The key is to look for different textures and to pair neutrals with some color. You can enter neutral territory and add a little flair with these tips:
Include some color. Add a splash of color with a bright, vibrant hue. Try different shades of red, coral, blue and green. White, while not exactly a color, always works and brings a fresh, crisp look to any outfit.
Choose textured fabrics. Neutrals come to life when you add sheen and sparkle and a bit of shimmer, which is usually flattering to skin tones.
Change up your accessories. Try a bright turquoise bag and metallic shoes. Or how about a classic animal print scarf and bag? The days of matching your shoes, belts and bags are over, so don't be afraid to try the unexpected.
Be bold. If you are pale, opt for a stronger shade of lip color when wearing neutrals. Bolder makeup will keep you from looking washed out.
Go dark on bottom. Anchor light colors with a darker neutral, such as rich chocolate brown or black. A darker color on the bottom is usually flattering on most.
It's all about the cut. Lighter colors have a tendency to makes you look heavier; however, if it is a solid color and the cut is flattering, you will look fabulous. Stay away from clingy fabrics or clothes that are too tight.
Pair with pale prints. Pale prints are an easy way to enjoy this trend and add visual interest and still have a classic look.
Spring Fashion Fling!

Happy Easter! Time to wake up from your winter fashion hibernation, shed a few layers and step out in spring style. April is a time for renewal and rebirth, and you can bring new life to your wardrobe by adding some vibrant colors in beautiful, flowing fabrics. The emphasis is on simple style this spring, with the hottest trends being things that add a new twist to the basics already in our closet. You only need a few key items to look as cute as a spring chick, or we should say, to look spring chic.
Denim
Touches of denim are everywhere. For an edgier look, go head-to-toe in denim. Or just add a piece or two to freshen up your wardrobe. This fabric is popping up on shoes, dresses and even handbags. Pair white or black denim jeans or a jacket with a bright-colored top for an instant spring update.
Get blue
Aqua, turquoise and ocean blues are THE colors for spring. This hue flatters almost every skin tone, and it's extremely versatile. The colors can be worn with white, black and neutrals.
Bring out the beige
Soft beige tones in sand, taupe and blush are no longer boring when paired up with pretty spring yellows and corals.
Find a great jacket, or two, or 10
Floral-print and striped trench coats in all lengths, as well as boyfriend blazers and motorcycle jackets in soft colorful leathers, are must-have items for the transition into summer. Opt for softer fabrics and colors for spring -- save the burgundy, black and brown leather for fall.
Add pizazz with accessories
Wedge sandals with wooden heels are hot for spring and will set the whole tone of your outfit. Spring scarves in floral print and sherbet colors can add a lot of flair for just a few bucks. Another inexpensive spring accessory trend? Big and bold, chunky jewelry that makes a statement.
Tips to Weather Winter In Style
by Valerie Weaver

Baby, it's cold outside! But dressing for winter weather doesn't mean sacrificing your fashion sense. Warmth doesn't have to be boring or bulky. Use layering, bright colors and fun fabrics to keep your winter look both fashionable and functional. These style tips will help keep you looking hot all winter long.
Layer it on
Don't just throw on an extra sweater, get creative and experiment with the layered look. Body-hugging long-sleeve T-shirts are great under turtlenecks and vests. Choosing the right fabric is key; a thin wicking layer, such as silk or polyester, next to your body will keep your body heat in. Avoid cotton if possible. You may find that many items in your closet can work year-round as a layering piece.
Accessorize with color
Choose vibrant, bold colors for hats, gloves and scarves. This is an easy way to add a pop of color to your basic winter coat. Scarves are a hot trend right now and there is a great variety of fabric, style and color. This is one accessory that can go with pretty much any outfit you create, and protect you from the elements.
Don't lose your shape
Got great legs? You don't have to wait until spring to show them off. Choose a great pair of winter tights or leggings in a bright color or texture. To balance your look, choose a heavier top or jacket. If you are wearing something wider on the bottom, opt for a cropped or belted jacket or vest.
Top off your boots
This is a fun, stylish must-have accessory. These furry toppers can be pulled over any boot you have. They can be worn over leggings as leg warmers or can be worn as cuffs on your coat or jacket. They can really change your look and dress up any outfit this winter.
Winter fashion can be as much fun as the rest of the seasons (maybe even more since you have to wear more) so get out there and enjoy all that fashion has to offer!
